 Abstract:  Thomas Saxton Ireland (1895-1969) was a Cleveland, Ohio, politician, lawyer and writer who ran as a conservative Republican candidate for the office of mayor of Cleveland, 1959, as well as numerous other political offices. He was a correspondent for the Plain Dealer and several other newspapers and authored a number of books, including several on the Saint Lawrence Seaway and one on the Sam Sheppard murder case. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of friends and family members. Subjects portrayed include Irish tourist attractions, Great Lakes ships and shipping, and originals of illustrations from Ireland's books.

 Abstract:  Thomas Aloysius Burke (1898-1971) was the mayor of Cleveland, Ohio (1945-1953) and a United States Senator from Ohio (1953-1954). Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, Ohio, is named in his honor. The collection consists of portraits, group portraits, and views depicting people, places, and events before, during, and after the mayoral terms of Burke. Included are views of the dedication of Burke Lakefront Airport (1960), including Burke, Anthony Celebreeze, and Frances Payne Bolton; rededication of the Erie St. Cemetery (1940); views of Republic Steel plants (ca. 1940s); the Collinwood railroad yard (1952); tornado damage on Cleveland's west side (1953); road and highway construction; bridges; election night, including Eliot Ness (1947); and a group portrait of the Association of Cities Meeting, Mansfield, Ohio (1948). Also included are photographs of architectural renderings and blueprints for various proposed buildings, including St. Vincent Charity Hospital neighborhood development; Cleveland Boy's School in Hudson, Ohio; and a Veteran's Administration Hospital.

 Abstract:  Jack Russell (1915-1979) was a Cleveland, Ohio, councilman, 1943-1971, council president, 1955-1963, and Democratic majority leader who was born Paul Ruschak, but changed his name in the 1930s. Russell was raised in the Hungarian-American community of Cleveland's Buckeye Road neighborhood and published newspapers in that area, including the Buckeye Press. He was councilman from the 16th ward from 1943 to 1971 and operated several businesses, including the Ohio Fire Protection Systems. Russell began the Night in Budapest celebration in 1957, which commemorated the Hungarian Freedom Fighters of 1956 and highlighted Hungarian culture and Hungarian-Americans. The collection consists of photographs, slides, negatives, and films pertaining to the political career of Jack P. Russell. Included are photographs of Cleveland City Council, both individual portraits and views and including the City Council softball team, ca. 1940s-1960s; local Cleveland politicians, including Thomas A. Burke, Anthony Celebrezze, Ray T. Miller, and Carl Stokes, often pictured with Russell; national political figures, usually taken during campaign events in Cleveland, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Harry S. Truman, Adlai Stevenson, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson; Cleveland Ward 16 political events; Democratic Party events, including rallies, picnics, dinners, and campaign photographs; city of Cleveland events, including park and playground dedications and ribbon cuttings, including several of the Port of Cleveland; friends, family, and associates of Russell; travel photographs to Hungary and other destinations; exteriors of the Ohio Fire Protection Systems office and Russell's campaign headquarters; and many photographs depicting the Night in Budapest event.

 Abstract:  Louis Van Oeyen (1865-1946) was the first photographer hired as staff on a Cleveland, Ohio, newspaper, and a pioneer in many techniques and activities of photojournalism. Van Oeyen was hired as a Cleveland Press photographer in 1901, after his photographs of the water intake explosion disaster in Lake Erie, and the assassination of President William McKinley, were published in the Press. During his career at the Press, he shot portraiture, politics, disaster, crime, scandal, and sports photographs. His greatest love was baseball, and he became official photographer for the American League in 1908, and for the World Series until 1922. Van Oeyen also helped test new photographic equipment, most notably the General Electric flash bulb in 1938. He assisted other photographers at the beginning of their careers, including Margaret Bourke-White and Herman Seid. Van Oeyen died in 1946. The collection consists of photographs and negatives taken by photographer Louis Van Oeyen before and during his career as a Cleveland Press photographer. A large portion of the collection depicts sports, particularly baseball. Other subjects include technological innovation, politics, entertainment, automobiles, aviation, horse racing, and boxing. There are extensive series of images from the Ormond Beach, Florida, auto races; the National Air Races held in Cleveland, Ohio; famous aviators; dirigibles; and ship launchings. Political coverage includes international, national and local figures, among them several presidents from Theodore Roosevelt to Franklin Roosevelt, and the coronation of King George VI of Great Britain. Celebrity portraits range from industrialists, including J. P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller, to entertainers, such as Buster Keaton and Yehudi Menuhin. Smaller bodies of subject material include photographs of crime, disaster, legal proceedings, and story art for fictional serial stories published by the newspaper. Crime illustration includes portraits of Cassie Chadwick. Disasters include the Collinwood School and Cleveland Clinic fires; floods; and aviation, automotive, and railroad wrecks. Legal coverage includes an extensive series on the John T. Scopes "Monkey Trial," including candid portraits of Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan. The collection is strongest in images from the 1900s and the 1920s-1930s.

 Abstract:  Ray Thomas Miller (1893-1966) was a prominent lawyer, businessman and Democratic political leader in Cleveland, Ohio, who served as assistant law director (1922-1923), city prosecutor (1928), and Mayor (1932-1935). A major accomplishment of his administration was the relief of the city's homeless and unemployed through the acquisition of federal WPA funds and the establishment of such programs as the Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority, the Wayfarer's Lodge, and municipal kitchens. The collection consists of photograph albums, a scrapbook, photographs, and negatives relating to the family, life, and career of Ray T. Miller, of Cleveland, Ohio. Included are four albums entitled Official Photographs of the 37th Division A.E.F., published by the E.R. Kissenger Co., Columbus, Ohio. Photographs in the albums depict World War I scenes ca. 1917-1918. Another album contains snapshots of a Miller family trip (ca. 1900) to California and the Southwest, and include family group portraits, raliroad scenes, photographs of western Native Americans, and views of the Grand Canyon. Loose photographs include portraits of Ray T. Miller and Miller family members; individual and group photographs at Defiance High School, Defiance, Ohio; photographs depicting the University of Notre Dame, including Notre Dame football teams, individual portraits of Knute Rockne, and individual football players; and photographs of Ray T. Miller and other members of the 37th Division A.E.F. during World War I. The bulk of photographs depict the political career of Ray T. Miller, and include scenes of Democratic National Conventions (1940, 1944, and 1960); political campaigns, including the Miller gubernatorial campaign of 1948 and various presidential campaign functions for Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Adlai Stevenson, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson; and local Cleveland and Ohio Democratic Party political functions and personalities, including the Cuyahoga County Democratic Steer Roast at Euclid Beach Park, Jack P. Russell, Stephen M. Young, and Anthony Celebrezze, and views of Judge Manuel Levine swearing Ray T. Miller in as mayor of Cleveland.

 Abstract:  Andrew Kraffert (1874-1958) was born in Titusville, Pennsylvania, and came to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1904 to work at the Cleveland Leader. He served as the staff photographer of the Cleveland Plain Dealer from 1908 until his retirement in 1953. The collection consists of photographs taken by Andrew Kraffert during his career as Plain Dealer news photographer. They cover a wide range of subjects including sporting events, especially baseball, American presidents and other political figures, prominent personalities, major events in Cleveland social and political life, including crimes and disasters, parades and celebrations, political campaigns, visits of numerous public figures, etc., as well as views of Cleveland structures and portraits of groups and individuals. The collection is especially useful to the study of early 20th century baseball, with many images of baseball players and action shots of the 1919 and 1920 World Series. The presidential photographs include presidents from William McKinley to Harry Truman, as well as an image of Abraham Lincoln, ca. 1860. There are also photos of many national and international figures. This collection also is significant for the study of Cleveland history as it helps to document events in Cleveland during the early part of the twentieth century. The crime scene photographs and disaster shots are particularly valuable to researchers.
